For some time I had not yet read something in Roddy Doyle and I had to decide. This summer, finally, the time has come: going on vacation and I wanted to locate in Ireland. And what better way is there to place that authors reading site where you going?
Overall, bucket after reviewing the literature on such varied Doyle, I decided to Star Called Henry (translated as A star called bucket Henry, translated by Ernest Riera, although not on the web editorial that was published 62 editions). There were other candidates, bucket such as The Woman Who stepped bucket into doors (a battered woman), Paddy Clarke bucket ha ha ha (a story about a boy), The Commitments, etc., but in the end I chose the novel I I would put more thought in Irish history.
And that is exactly bucket what I found: a short novel about the birth of the Republic bucket of Ireland. The story spans from the late nineteenth century, when parents know the protagonist, until 1922, when is the new country. The book therefore begins with the description of a Dublin industrial contaminated people starving and lives badly as you can, with a high rate of infant death that touches closely protagonist, Henry, and levels of Unemployment is also very high. Children who beg and steal what they can, women who lose their children just born ... a drama. There comes a point, however, in which the author considers that it has sufficiently explained and misfortune happens to Easter 1916, when there was an armed uprising to try out the English. Do not go out, and the punishment was impressive were executed all the leaders of the revolt under Eamon de Valera and Michael Collins, who later resumed clandestine struggle bucket until, in 1922, was proclaimed Republic of Ireland and Valera was its first president.
And what paints, Henry, in all this? For starters, they put the name of his brother who had died. Bad start, right? Then, along with his brother Victor, seeks life on the streets looking for food and stealing away. Since larger, at 14, took part in the events of 1916 and later became part of the underground movement and teaches men how weapons and how to sabotage activities against the English. The book ends when, after all the work done and the proclamation of the republic, the leaders of the movement believe that Henry is too dangerous and too many things and who knows ...
I leave here, I have already explained things it touches. We spent a link to The Guardian also speaks. Read on and get to see if you like it as much as me. In any case, it is very interesting bucket reading now that there are processes in place for the independence referendum.
